PACE

Timing is crucial in auditioning for the camera. You don’t have an editor to make cuts that correct the timing of your scenes. In general, you need to sense how to pick up the pace and not be self-indulgent in elongating moments. However, if you rush through the material and don’t give yourself the time to breathe and play truthfully, you may miss the juice of the scene. There are times when cues should be picked up immediately, and times when you should allow your partner’s response to land on you before you respond. Practice in front of a camera, then play it back. You should be able to tell when your timing works for the scene and when it doesn’t.

In comedy, the pace is faster than in drama. We become aware of the absence of pace in comedy when you lose the energy and humor of the scene. Be sensitive to the rhythm of the material and, at the same time, play the moments. The balance is sometimes difficult to find but important to achieve.
